What does Sensory Learning mean?

Sensory learning refers to the process of using sensory experiences to help children learn and develop new skills. This approach recognizes that children learn best when they are actively engaged with their environment and can use all their senses to explore and make meaning of the world around them.

In occupational therapy and reading tutoring, sensory learning can take many forms, such as:

  • Using tactile materials like sand, clay, or textured fabrics to help children engage with and understand new concepts.

  • Incorporating movement and physical activity into learning activities, such as standing up to spell out words or using gross motor skills to complete puzzles.

  • Using visual aids like pictures, diagrams, or videos to help children make connections between different ideas and concepts.

  • Providing a calm and supportive environment that helps children feel safe and focused, such as using soft lighting or calming music during reading sessions.

Overall, sensory learning is a powerful tool for helping children with a range of learning challenges, including dyslexia, ADHD, and autism. By tapping into children's natural curiosity and desire to explore, we can help them develop new skills and achieve their full potential.
