Hello

What is The Relaxed Reading Revolution?

It’s a new approach to teaching reading and writing.

It takes the stress out of helping your struggling reader learn to read.

If your child has difficulty with reading you know how hard it is to get them to read at night. Why would they want to read with you at night when they struggle so much with it all day at school?

As the school years go by, your child becomes more aware of their struggles with literacy. They see that their peers are reading fluently. They notice that they don’t and they become self conscious. They work hard to avoid any situation where they may be asked to read aloud, or read with a partner. And in time they can become overwhelmed with anxiety and fear around reading. They may no longer enjoy school, complain of stomach aches every morning before school, and start believing, and even say, that they are ‘dumb’.

But we know differently. In most cases, intelligence and reading are not related. Learning to read IS rocket science. It is a very complex task that requires the integration of several parts of the brain, and if these parts don’t work together seamlessly, your child might experience delays in learning to read. Reading does not come naturally like speech. In the majority of children, reading and decoding need to be explicitly taught.

Knowing this, it is not surprising that 1 out of every 5 individuals has dyslexia.

The Science is conclusive.

I’ve been teaching and tutoring reading and spelling for the past thirty years. I’ve watched the pendulum swing from “whole language” (what we now call “balanced literacy”) to science backed, “structured literacy”. The “Reading Wars” are real and for the first time we have actual researched and evidenced data that tells us exactly how the brain learns to read.

And this is some really exciting stuff!

The biggest benefit of all of this new science and knowledge is that now more than ever before, there is awareness of, and help for, children and individuals who struggle with dyslexia. We now know exactly how children learn to read, and regardless of whether a child has dyslexia or not, we can use the best practices of a structured, explicit and systematic reading approach to teach all children how to read.

The science is in. (Mic drop)

And we now know exactly how to help the child with dyslexia or teach the preschooler who is just learning to read.

So what exactly is The Relaxed Reading Revolution (or R3)?
It is a way to diffuse the anxiety of learning to read - for both parent and child.

It empowers YOU, Mama.

You are your child’s biggest and best advocate. You are your child’s solace. And YOU can help your child learn to read.

Yes, you can.

It’s called a Revolution because it’s a full one hundred eighty degree change - (maybe that’s only a half of a revolution - but you know what I mean!).

It’s also called a revolution because it’s a completely new way to teach your child to read - or support your child’s teacher or tutor.

It’s REVOLUTIONARY! (if I may say so myself…)

It is a relaxed, loving and gentle approach to teaching your child to read and instilling in them a love of reading that will last a lifetime. It helps you see that you can make a teachable moment out of almost anything in your child’s day.

The traditional way of tutoring is over for me. With The Relaxed Reading Revolution, I spend 30 to 60 minutes each week tutoring your child online. You watch what I am doing and with my guidance, carry over our lesson for only fifteen minutes a day for the rest of the week with your child. I supply you with videos for demonstration and downloadable activities and games, you carve out the time in your busy schedule.

You create a calm and relaxed environment where you can work with your child in gentle and joyful ways around literacy (and even a little occupational therapy sprinkled in too!).

So, if you want an alternative to one to one weekly tutoring for your child, consider spending an hour a week with me so the rest of your week can be spent gently and joyfully immersing your child in literacy.

If we work as a team we can really make a change in your child’s reading development.
